Deadly Hotel Fire in New Delhi Kills 21, Dozens Rescued
At least 21 people were killed and several others injured after a devastating fire engulfed a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi on Wednesday morning.
According to local authorities, the blaze erupted at the “Flourish Stay B&B” hotel and quickly spread throughout the building. Following an emergency call received around 9:00 a.m., the Delhi Fire Service dispatched multiple fire engines, water tankers, and rescue teams to the scene.
Witnesses reported scenes of panic as guests attempted to escape the smoke-filled building. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show two women jumping from the building in a desperate attempt to save their lives.
Rescue personnel successfully evacuated more than 40 people from the premises, while several injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The death toll continued to rise during rescue operations before authorities confirmed 21 fatalities.
Reports suggest that the hotel had permission to operate only six rooms under Delhi’s Bed and Breakfast scheme, but was allegedly running as many as 25 rooms, including some located in the basement. The revelations have raised serious concerns regarding licensing violations and fire safety compliance.
Officials said the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and a formal investigation has been launched to determine whether fire safety regulations were being followed.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance of ₹200,000 for the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for the injured. He described the loss of lives in the Malviya Nagar fire as deeply saddening and extended his condolences to the affected families.
