Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that generating additional resources and ensuring funding for defence and counter-terrorism efforts remain key priorities of the government as preparations for the upcoming federal budget continue.

Addressing a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), the Prime Minister stated that consultations with provincial governments have been ongoing for several weeks to identify ways of increasing national resources and strengthening economic planning.

He emphasized that Pakistan continues to face security challenges and that adequate resources are required to combat terrorism. He paid tribute to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, acknowledging their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

Referring to the regional situation, the Prime Minister noted that global oil prices have surged significantly, leading to fuel shortages and long queues at petrol stations in several countries. He said that timely government measures and cooperation from the provinces helped ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies across Pakistan.

Shehbaz Sharif revealed that the government provided Rs128 billion in relief to the public in the form of petroleum-related subsidies and support measures.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan’s economy is now showing signs of macroeconomic stability, but stressed that creating employment opportunities, increasing exports, improving productivity, and sustaining economic growth require collective efforts.

He also highlighted the government’s commitment to continuing reforms under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme despite economic challenges.
