How Much Is the FIFA World Cup Trophy Worth? The Answer May Surprise You
With anticipation growing for the FIFA World Cup 2026, football fans around the world are once again focusing on the sport’s most prestigious prize — the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
Based solely on the value of the gold and precious materials used in its construction, the trophy is estimated to be worth approximately $250,000. However, experts say its true value is far greater because of its historical significance and global prestige.
Analysts believe that if the original FIFA World Cup Trophy were ever auctioned, its value could exceed $20 million.
The trophy stands 37 centimeters tall, weighs around 6 kilograms, and is made from 18-carat gold. It also features two layers of green malachite stone at its base.
Interestingly, the trophy is not made of solid gold. It is hollow on the inside to keep its weight manageable for players lifting it during celebrations.
The current design was created in 1970 by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga and was first awarded at the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
Under FIFA regulations, winning teams are not allowed to keep the original trophy permanently. After the final ceremony, the trophy is returned to FIFA headquarters in Zurich, while champions receive a gold-plated replica as a commemorative award.
