Pakistan Launches New Trade Corridor to Central Asia via Iran, First Shipment Sent to Tashkent
Pakistan has officially activated a new trade corridor connecting Gwadar Port to Central Asia through Iran, marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity and trade expansion. The first consignment of frozen meat has been successfully dispatched to Tashkent under this initiative.
The corridor begins at Gwadar Port and passes through Iran’s border points before reaching Central Asian states. It operates under a United Nations-backed customs transit system, allowing sealed containers to cross multiple borders with minimal inspections, thereby reducing delays and logistical hurdles.
Officials state that the new route will significantly cut transit time and transportation costs while opening direct access to Central Asian markets, with a combined population exceeding 70 million. This development comes at a crucial time when traditional trade routes through Afghanistan, including Torkham and Chaman crossings, remain disrupted due to border tensions.
Analysts believe the corridor will not only enhance cargo capacity at Gwadar and Karachi ports but also strengthen the strategic importance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). China has shown keen interest in linking this route to Central Asia, further boosting regional trade integration.
