European Union Praises Pakistan’s Mediation Role in US-Iran Talks
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts in helping ease tensions between the United States and Iran, calling the country’s diplomatic role highly commendable.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar following the 8th Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue in Islamabad, Kallas described Pakistan as a major regional power and an important partner of the European Union.
She noted that the US-Iran dispute has contributed to global energy concerns and stressed the importance of maintaining a lasting ceasefire and continuing diplomatic negotiations.
Kallas specifically acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue and reducing tensions, emphasizing that such diplomatic initiatives are crucial for promoting peace and stability in the current international environment.
Expressing her pleasure at visiting Pakistan, she said the country has the right to defend itself and its people in accordance with international law.
Referring to recent Pakistan-India tensions, Kallas warned that the situation could have led to serious consequences and greater regional instability. She said the European Union consistently urged both countries to exercise restraint and pursue de-escalation.
The EU foreign policy chief stated that a key objective for 2026 is to further strengthen and modernize Pakistan-EU relations and expand cooperation in multiple sectors.
During her visit, Kallas is also scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Field Marshal Asim Munir to discuss bilateral relations, regional security, and international developments.
