Authorities have approved plans to construct new water supply projects aimed at addressing the growing water shortages in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with a target completion date set for December 2027.

The approval was granted during a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi. The meeting was attended by the adviser to the prime minister, the chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), and senior officials from Wapda and the Punjab government.

During the meeting, officials approved the construction of the Dotara Dam and the Shahdara Dam as key components of the water supply strategy for the twin cities. Wapda presented initial findings for the Dotara Dam, which will be constructed upstream of the existing Khanpur Dam.

According to officials, the Dotara Dam is expected to supply approximately 72 million gallons of water per day. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs. 40 billion, excluding land acquisition costs. The meeting directed Wapda to complete a detailed feasibility report within two months.

Authorities instructed relevant departments to begin construction immediately after the completion and approval of the feasibility study to ensure the projects meet the December 2027 deadline.

The meeting also approved the construction of the Shahdara Dam on the Shahdara stream in the Margalla Hills. Officials stated that the dam will supply an additional 10 million gallons of water per day at an estimated cost of Rs. 4 billion.

Officials emphasized that these projects are critical to ensuring a sustainable water supply for the rapidly growing populations of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and to addressing long-term water security challenges in the region.
