Senate Passes 27th Constitutional Amendment with Two-Third Majority Amid Opposition Walkout

The Senate, under the chairmanship of Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, has passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill with a two-thirds majority.
The bill, consisting of 56 clauses, was presented by Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and includes several key amendments and deletions to the Constitution.

A total of 64 members voted in favor of the amendment, while 4 opposed it. The opposition protested, tore copies of the agenda, and staged a walkout before the final voting.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar clarified during the debate that under Article 63A, a member is not immediately disqualified merely for casting a dissenting vote, as the process involves formal procedures through the Election Commission.

Following its passage, the bill will be sent to the President for assent, after which the Law Ministry will issue a Gazette notification. JUI-F opposed the bill, while PTI boycotted the voting process.
