PML-N and PPP Drop Support for Constitutional Courts in 26th Amendment Talks

A significant political breakthrough has been achieved regarding the 26th Constitutional Amendment as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have withdrawn their support for the establishment of constitutional courts. This move follows a special parliamentary committee meeting where the government coalition parties, along with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), agreed on forming a constitutional bench instead.

Parliamentary sources indicated that the government and JUI are now set to consult with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on a joint draft. JUI Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is expected to share the proposal with the PTI leadership for further discussion.

Earlier, Maulana Fazlur Rehman had rejected the government’s draft for the constitutional amendment, expressing concerns that the changes could infringe upon individual freedoms. However, following discussions with the PPP leadership, several controversial provisions were withdrawn. The agreement now paves the way for broader consensus on judicial reforms.
