Pakistan in Grip of Extreme Heatwave, Temperatures Hit Record 48°C

Pakistan is currently experiencing one of the most severe heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures rising significantly above normal levels across most regions. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the heat intensity is likely to increase in the coming days.
According to PMD, temperatures in the upper and plain areas of the country are expected to remain 5 to 7°C above normal, with conditions potentially turning into a full-blown heatwave.
On Thursday, the highest temperatures of the year so far were recorded in Dadu (Sindh) and Turbat (Balochistan) — both reaching a sweltering 48°C. Other cities like Dera Ghazi Khan reported 47°C, while Bhakkar, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and Nokundi recorded 46°C.
In Punjab, the scorching sun has tightened its grip. Lahore and several other cities are experiencing dry and oppressive conditions, with forecasts predicting maximum temperatures up to 43°C.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert across the province, warning that extreme temperatures will persist until May 19, posing serious health risks.
Meteorologists and health experts have urged citizens to stay indoors during peak heat hours, cover their heads when outside, and consume plenty of water and fluids to stay hydrated.
PMD has also warned that no rain is expected in most parts of the country over the next two to three days. Citizens are strongly advised to take all necessary precautions until at least May 20, when the current heatwave is expected to ease.
