Lahore Faces ‘Red Alert’ as Smog Levels Surge, Health Officials Sound Alarm

The Punjab Environment Department has declared a ‘red alert’ for Lahore in anticipation of a significant rise in smog levels over the next few days. The alert comes in response to forecasts from the Met Office, predicting worsening air quality from November 6 to 8, which has triggered urgent health warnings for the city’s residents.

As of 1 PM today, Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) reached a staggering 293, making it one of the most polluted cities in the world. This alarming figure exceeds World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines by an astonishing 42.8 times, with specific areas experiencing even more severe conditions. Gulberg recorded an AQI of 515, while Defence Phase 8 and DHA Phase 5 reported AQIs of 424 and 416, respectively.

Experts have noted that changes in wind patterns, shifting from east to west at a speed of 4 km/h, could exacerbate the situation, leading to even poorer air quality. In light of these conditions, medical professionals are advising residents to minimize outdoor activities and wear masks when necessary to protect their health.

In a proactive response to the escalating air pollution, the Punjab Environment Department has established a Smog War Room. This task force, directed by Environment DG Imran Hamid Sheikh, comprises 18 members, including officers from eight different departments. The War Room is responsible for air quality management, monitoring smog forecasts, and overseeing industries and traffic. Representatives from the health department, Safe City, meteorology, and SUPARCO are also involved in this initiative.

With Lahore’s air quality deteriorating at an alarming rate, the government and health officials are urging immediate action to combat this environmental crisis and protect the health of the city’s residents.
