Punjab Announces 70 Midwifery Schools to Improve Maternal and Newborn Health
In a major step towards improving maternal and newborn healthcare, the Punjab government has announced the establishment of 70 midwifery schools across the province.
The initiative has been launched under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s flagship healthcare program in collaboration with the Health and Population Department and the Health Services Academy (HSA).
According to officials, Associate Degree courses in nursing and midwifery will be introduced at district and tehsil levels under the supervision of HSA Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shehzad Ali Khan and Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Dr. Maryam Sarfraz.
The program aims to train skilled midwives who will later have opportunities to continue towards bachelor-level education. Authorities believe the initiative will significantly reduce risks related to childbirth and newborn health complications, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Officials described the project as one of the largest community-based healthcare initiatives in the region’s history, laying the foundation for an improved and sustainable maternal healthcare system in Punjab.
