Hantavirus Fears Trigger Conspiracy Theories as Old Bill Gates Interview Resurfaces
As reports of recent hantavirus cases and deaths emerge, an old interview of Bill Gates has gone viral again on social media, sparking fresh conspiracy theories and fears about another potential global pandemic.
In the resurfaced interview, Bill Gates had warned that the world must prepare better for future pandemics, saying that COVID-19 would not be the last global outbreak and that a future pandemic could be even more severe.
Following the recent hantavirus-related news, some social media users began claiming that Gates had specifically predicted the hantavirus outbreak. However, several fact-check reports clarified that Gates never mentioned hantavirus directly. His earlier general statements about future pandemics were misleadingly linked to current events, causing confusion and fear online.
Health experts say such rumors spread rapidly whenever people become highly sensitive to health-related news or reports of new virus outbreaks.
Meanwhile, former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield described the recent hantavirus spread as “extremely alarming.” Redfield had previously made headlines for controversial statements regarding the origins of COVID-19.
Hantavirus is a group of viruses mainly spread by certain species of rodents. The virus can spread through rodent urine, droppings, and saliva, although the animals themselves usually do not become sick.
Global concern increased after reports emerged in May 2026 about a hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship “MV Hondius” in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the World Health Organization, three people have died and five confirmed cases have been reported on the vessel so far.
However, the WHO has stressed that the overall risk to the general public remains low. WHO epidemic preparedness director Maria Van Kerkhove stated that the current situation is not comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing that hantavirus and coronavirus are entirely different viruses.
