Pakistan Braces for Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Expected to Hit 45°C
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for several parts of the country, particularly Sindh, southern Punjab, and interior Balochistan, where temperatures are expected to remain significantly above normal during the next seven days.
According to the weather department, temperatures in southern regions may rise 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above average, with some areas likely to experience temperatures between 44°C and 45°C by the weekend.
In Karachi, temperatures are expected to range between 36°C and 38°C over the next 24 hours. However, humidity levels around 66 percent could make the weather feel much hotter.
Interior Sindh districts including Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Dadu, and Jamshoro are expected to face the harshest conditions, with temperatures likely to exceed 44°C.
The PMD also warned of heatwave-like conditions in central and southern Punjab, although occasional dusty winds and isolated rainfall in northern areas may provide temporary relief.
Meteorologists said the unusual rise in temperature at the beginning of May is linked to ongoing climate change patterns, while no major rainfall system is expected in the near future.
In response to the warning, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed authorities to remain on high alert and establish heatwave relief camps in vulnerable areas. Hospitals have also been instructed to make special arrangements for heat-related patients.
Authorities and health experts advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., drink plenty of water, cover their heads outdoors, and stay in shaded places whenever possible.
Special caution has been advised for elderly people, children, and outdoor laborers to prevent heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses
