President Joe Biden urged Americans to lower the political temperature following the attempted assassination of his Republican rival, Donald Trump, during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump, who was shot at the rally on Saturday, fortunately escaped serious injury. “This incident calls on all of us to take a step back,” Biden said, emphasizing the importance of resolving differences through democratic means rather than violence. “We can’t allow this violence to be normalized. The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down,” he added.

Biden’s address, lasting about seven minutes and broadcast live by major networks including Fox News, marked his third use of the Oval Office for comments on significant national issues since taking office in 2021. With less than four months until the November 5 election, Biden’s political future remains uncertain, and this speech provided an opportunity to project the authority of his incumbency.

Reflecting on recent instances of political violence, Biden cited the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol and the attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in 2022. “Violence has never been the answer,” Biden reiterated, stressing the need for civility and democratic processes in addressing political differences.

The President also highlighted the historical context, noting that four US presidents have been assassinated and several others have survived assassination attempts. Multiple presidential candidates have also been targeted, some fatally. Biden’s call for calm comes at a critical juncture as the nation approaches a contentious election, reminding Americans of their shared responsibility to maintain peace and democracy.
