Eight Glasses of Water May Not Be Enough During Heatwaves, Health Experts Warn
Health experts have warned that drinking eight glasses of water per day may not be enough during periods of extreme heat and heatwaves, as the body’s hydration requirements increase significantly in hot weather.
According to medical professionals, high temperatures cause the body to lose water and essential electrolytes through sweating, increasing the risk of dehydration. People who work outdoors, athletes, elderly individuals, and frequent travelers may require more fluids than usual.
Experts noted that thirst is not the first sign of dehydration. By the time a person feels thirsty, mild dehydration may have already begun. Common symptoms include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle cramps, and dark-colored urine.
Doctors also cautioned against consuming excessive amounts of water in a short period, as it may disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance. Instead, water should be consumed regularly and in moderate amounts throughout the day.
In addition to water, beverages such as coconut water, lemonade, and yogurt-based drinks can help replenish lost electrolytes. Water-rich foods including watermelon, cucumber, citrus fruits, and yogurt can also support healthy hydration.
Health experts advised individuals with kidney disease, heart conditions, or those taking diuretic medications not to increase their water intake without consulting a physician.
They emphasized that during a heatwave, staying hydrated according to individual needs, weather conditions, and activity levels remains one of the most effective ways to prevent heat-related illnesses.
