Jerusalem Hills Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations, Israel Declares National Emergency
A raging wildfire that burned for more than 30 hours across the hills near Jerusalem has left behind massive destruction, forcing thousands to evacuate and prompting Israel to declare a national emergency.
The blaze, which began earlier this week, scorched over 20,000 dunams (5,000 acres), including 70% of Canada Park, a forested area in the West Bank. Firefighting teams worked around the clock, with support from helicopters of the Israeli Air Force, to control the flames.
Authorities reopened roads and railway lines Friday after the fire was mostly contained. Residents of the affected areas have been allowed to return home, though firefighters remain on alert to prevent any resurgence.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed the wildfire on Palestinian arson, declaring the situation a national emergency. The Israeli police have confirmed the arrest of three suspects, while Netanyahu earlier incorrectly claimed 18 arrests during a public address.
The Jewish National Fund reported extensive forest damage, and Independence Day celebrations were cancelled due to the fire emergency.
An official investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Meanwhile, international assistance has been sought to support firefighting efforts.
