Prices of vegetables and fruits have surged across urban and rural areas of Khanpur, with a significant gap emerging between official rates and prices being charged in local markets.
Tomatoes are reportedly selling for as much as Rs380 per kilogram, despite an official rate of Rs100. Garlic, officially priced at Rs200, is being sold for up to Rs400 per kg, while lemons are reportedly fetching Rs250 per kg against an official rate of Rs120.
Similarly, mangoes are being sold for up to Rs380 per kg, compared with the reported official price of Rs200.
The sharp increase has put additional pressure on household budgets, prompting residents to call on the district administration to enforce official price lists, strengthen market monitoring and take action against profiteering.
