Islamabad: A Senate standing committee has recommended a significant reduction in taxes imposed on imported mobile phones, citing the burden on consumers.
During the meeting, the committee directed customs authorities to establish a transparent and effective mechanism for determining the actual value of imported mobile phones.
Senators also questioned whether taxes should be imposed on mobile phones meant for ordinary consumers, while FBR officials clarified that the legal authority to impose or abolish taxes rests with Parliament.
The meeting also discussed the impact of additional sales taxes on mobile phone purchases and digital payments, with officials stressing the need to avoid policies that could hinder digitalization.
