A Chinese court has sentenced the billionaire owner of a real estate development company to life imprisonment in a case involving financial crimes.

According to a news agency report, the court also ordered the confiscation of all of his property and imposed a massive fine of $1.31 billion.

The company owner was accused of misusing funds, fraud and illegally raising money from the public, among other financial offenses. According to the report, he pleaded guilty in April to eight charges brought against him.

The court also sentenced five senior executives of the company to prison terms ranging from six to 18 years, along with financial penalties.

The judgment represents a major legal action against the company’s leadership, with the court imposing both lengthy imprisonment and significant financial penalties over the alleged financial misconduct and illegal fundraising activities.
