Pakistan’s disappointing start to the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 was compounded by an unusual administrative blunder during their opening match against England, which they lost 4-1.
The incident occurred around the 17th minute when England won a penalty corner and Pakistan suddenly needed its protective equipment. According to reports, the required gear had been left in the dressing room, forcing a Pakistani player to rush back to retrieve it.
The delay resulted in Pakistan captain Abu Bakar Mahmood receiving a green card from the referee and spending two minutes off the field.
Former Pakistan captain Salman Akbar reacted strongly to the incident, describing it as another “unwanted record” for Pakistan hockey and questioning the team’s level of preparation and discipline.
Akbar argued that preparation for a major international tournament is not limited to tactics, fitness and technical ability. Ensuring that all essential equipment is available at the right time is also a fundamental part of professional preparation.
The incident added to Pakistan’s difficult opening night as England secured a 4-1 victory. Pakistan must now quickly regroup, with Wales and India next on their schedule on August 17 and August 19 respectively.
Pakistan remain one of hockey’s most historically successful teams. The FIH describes the side as four-time world champions and three-time Olympic gold medallists.
