A new study by US researchers suggests that exercise intensity may have a major influence on the body’s immediate biological response. Short bursts of very intense exercise produced substantially broader changes in blood proteins than moderate-intensity cycling.
Researchers analyzed blood samples after different exercise intensities. Following sprint-interval exercise, 714 proteins showed significant changes immediately after the workout, compared with only 7 proteins following moderate-intensity exercise at the same time point.
The intense exercise also increased levels of Lac-Phe, an exercise-responsive metabolite that has been linked to appetite and metabolic regulation.
The findings suggest that exercise intensity, not just duration, can strongly influence the body’s biological response. However, the results should not be interpreted as proving that three minutes of intense exercise is universally equivalent to 90 minutes of cycling; the study primarily examined acute molecular responses rather than long-term health outcomes.
