A new study suggests that music may help people recover from psychological stress, with its effects potentially extending beyond simply distracting the mind.
Researchers led by scientists from the Institute of Psychology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted two experiments involving 120 healthy young adults. The findings were published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers examined how music affects stress recovery and whether its effects differ from other calming sounds.
In the first experiment, participants completed a stressful mental arithmetic task and listened either to calming music or soft sounds of natural water before or after the task.
The results showed that listening to music before the stressful task did not significantly reduce the initial stress response. However, during the recovery period after the stressful task, participants who listened to music reported greater improvements in positive mood. Some physiological measures also indicated faster recovery from stress.
In the second experiment, researchers conducted brain scans while participants were recovering from stress. They found changes in communication between the auditory cortex and brain regions involved in monitoring bodily states, identifying important signals and regulating physical and emotional stress, including the insula and thalamus.
The findings suggest that music may play a role in stress recovery through both psychological and physiological processes. However, because the study involved healthy young adults, further research is needed to determine how broadly the findings apply to other populations and clinical conditions.
