Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is expected to arrive in Tehran today following a key statement by US President Donald Trump regarding negotiations with Iran.
Trump said in his latest remarks that he was in no hurry to reach an agreement with Tehran to end the conflict. According to the US president, both economic and military measures against Iran were proving effective, while he had sufficient time to resolve the issue through negotiations.
According to Arab media reports, the Qatari prime minister will hold meetings with Iranian officials during his visit to Tehran, with discussions expected to focus on reducing regional tensions and creating conditions conducive to diplomatic negotiations.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Dr. Majed Al Ansari said the visit would include discussions on ways to reduce tensions and establish a suitable environment for dialogue.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry described the visit as part of Doha’s continued efforts to promote diplomacy as a means of resolving disputes and supporting peace and stability in the region.
The free movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is also expected to be discussed during the meetings.
Meanwhile, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, saying a tanker was struck by a projectile from an unknown direction and subsequently caught fire.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, had earlier said that the Strait of Hormuz remained closed. He said reopening the waterway completely would require the United States to return to commitments made under a June 17 memorandum of understanding.
