Jamaat-e-Islami has announced that its long march towards Islamabad has been postponed until the first week of October. JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the party would not withdraw from its protest movement or its long-march plan.
Speaking to the media in Multan, Hafiz Naeem said the party had already held protests and sit-ins across the country and had also engaged with the government over public relief.
He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had assured the JI that he would meet the party after returning to Pakistan and work towards providing relief to the public.
Following consultations, the party decided to defer the long march until the first week of October, while continuing its protest campaign. Hafiz Naeem said that if the government provides relief, the situation could be reviewed; otherwise, the party would proceed with its long march in October.
The development came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif contacted Hafiz Naeem by phone and requested that the march be postponed. According to the JI, the prime minister also offered to meet the party after his return and discuss a better relief package.
