The United States and Iran exchanged a major wave of attacks throughout last night, ending weeks of relative calm and raising fears that the conflict between the two countries is escalating once again.
The U.S. Central Command said American forces carried out strikes against several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran, including air-defense systems, radar installations, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities.
Iranian officials and state media said Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against U.S. assets in Jordan, Iraq and Bahrain. Jordan's military said 13 ballistic missiles entered its airspace, with 10 intercepted and three falling in remote areas. Bahrain also said its forces intercepted and destroyed Iranian drones.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard separately claimed that its forces attacked U.S. bases in Erbil, Iraq, but the reported casualties among U.S. personnel have not been independently confirmed. Two U.S. officials told Reuters that initial assessments showed no American casualties in Jordan.
Wedding Hit Near Strait of Hormuz
The Iranian Red Crescent said five people were killed and at least 50 wounded during an attack near Sirik, a coastal area close to the Strait of Hormuz, where a wedding was taking place. Iranian media reported that the number of wounded could be as high as 68 and said a four-year-old child was among those killed.
U.S. officials have not immediately commented on the reported wedding incident.
The overnight exchange marks the most serious fighting between the two sides since July. The conflict had entered a period of relative calm in recent weeks, with both sides largely holding their fire and showing limited signs of returning to negotiations.
The renewed attacks have once again raised concerns about a wider regional conflict, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's military command warned that continued American attacks would trigger stronger and broader retaliation, while U.S. President Donald Trump maintained a hard-line position on Iran and the situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
