Amnesty International has called for the abolition of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, citing alleged widespread human rights violations during immigration enforcement operations.
In a new report, the organisation documented allegations involving migrants, asylum seekers and refugees across several US cities, including Chicago, Minneapolis, St Paul, New Orleans and Washington, DC.
According to Amnesty, the report identifies allegations of arbitrary arrests, unjustified use of force, suppression of peaceful protests, surveillance and concerns over detention conditions.
The organisation has also called for independent investigations into deaths involving federal immigration enforcement personnel. Amnesty said the US should establish an immigration enforcement system that complies with international human rights law and standards.
The call comes after Amnesty published a new report examining immigration enforcement operations and its case for abolishing ICE.
