The Assam government in India has announced strict measures against government employees who remarry without legally divorcing their first wife and those who neglect their parents.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, government employees who marry again while their first marriage is legally intact will face deductions from their salaries. The deducted amount will be transferred directly to the bank account of the first wife.

The Chief Minister said the first wife would have to submit an application to the government to receive the financial support.

He further clarified that the salary deduction could continue even if the divorce matter is pending before a court. According to him, the objective is to provide financial assistance to the first wife without waiting for the completion of lengthy legal proceedings.

The Assam government has also announced a separate measure concerning employees who neglect their parents. Under the announced policy, 10 percent of the salary of such government employees will be deducted.

The announcement has been described as a significant move concerning the family and financial responsibilities of government employees. The measures, however, apply to government employees in the Indian state of Assam.
