An Islamabad High Court hearing involving a woman with a PhD in philosophy, who has been accused of allegedly assaulting her husband and two minor daughters, took an unusual turn when exchanges between the court and lawyers prompted laughter in the courtroom.
Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro heard a bail petition filed by the father of the woman, identified as Amina Saeed, in connection with the case.
During the proceedings, the defence lawyer argued that the woman had allegedly assaulted her husband on three occasions, leaving marks of violence on his body.
As arguments began, laughter was heard in the courtroom. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro remarked to the lawyer, "You are laughing yourself, and the whole courtroom is laughing."
The judge also asked, "Is this woman some kind of commando?" The lawyer responded that even if the woman had hit her husband in anger, she was the "lord of the house."
The court further asked whether the woman had taken her husband to hospital in her vehicle after the alleged assault. The lawyer told the court that an iron rod had allegedly been recovered from the woman and claimed that it had been prepared for use in the alleged assault.
The petitioner's lawyer informed the court that Amina Saeed holds a PhD in philosophy and described the matter as a family dispute, adding that there were certain aspects of the dispute that they did not wish to discuss before the court.
Justice Soomro also asked what the woman did professionally besides holding a PhD. The court questioned the investigating officer about whether her mental condition had been examined at the time of her arrest. The investigating officer replied that no such assessment had been conducted.
The defence also alleged that the woman had assaulted her two minor daughters. She is currently in police custody, while her father has sought bail on her behalf.
