A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been convened following the tragic fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad that resulted in the deaths of newborn babies.
According to the information provided, the prime minister expressed strong displeasure over the incident and ordered the immediate suspension and removal of Federal Health Secretary Aslam Ghori from his position.
The prime minister also ordered the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and determine responsibility.
Former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan will head the inquiry committee, while Establishment Secretary Dr Barrister Nabeel Awan has also been named as a member.
The committee will examine various aspects of the incident, including hospital safety arrangements, administrative responsibility, possible negligence and the response to the fire.
The tragic deaths of newborn babies at PIMS had already raised serious questions over fire safety and emergency arrangements at the hospital. The latest government action signals that responsibility will now be examined at the highest level.
