US President Donald Trump has said that Iran is currently engaged in discussions with the United States and is seeking a possible agreement, but stressed that Washington will not allow Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
Speaking at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, Trump said Iranian officials are communicating with the United States and appear interested in reaching an agreement. However, he added that Iran may not yet be fully prepared for a deal and that the timing may not be right.
The US president stated that his administration remains willing to listen to Iran's position and pursue diplomacy, but made it clear that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a non-negotiable objective.
Trump also claimed that recent US military operations had significantly weakened Iran's military capabilities. He asserted that Iran's navy had been severely degraded, its air force had suffered extensive damage, and numerous military assets, including aircraft and naval vessels, had been destroyed.
He further claimed that Iran's radar systems and drone capabilities had been substantially reduced. According to Trump, while Iran may continue to demonstrate limited military activity, its overall operational capability has been significantly diminished.
Reiterating his administration's position, Trump said the primary objective of US policy is to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, arguing that such a development would pose a serious threat to regional and global security.
