A security guard killed an Indian mongoose after spotting the animal on Karachi’s Northern Bypass.
According to the Wildlife Department, the mongoose was reportedly killed over concerns that it could harm domestic animals.
Wildlife officials said the mongoose is commonly found in Pakistan, India, Nepal and several other parts of South Asia. The animal is also frequently seen near human settlements, much like crows, squirrels and sparrows.
The Wildlife Department said the mongoose is an environmentally beneficial and generally harmless animal and should not be killed.
Officials advised citizens to avoid taking matters into their own hands when they encounter wild animals and instead inform the relevant wildlife authorities so that the animals can be safely relocated or dealt with.
