Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated her intention to return to Bangladesh in December, saying that the risks of arrest, torture or even death would not deter her from standing by her supporters.
According to foreign media reports, Hasina made the remarks while addressing a press conference in Washington online. She said returning to Bangladesh was her responsibility and that she would not change her decision despite the dangers she might face.
Hasina reportedly said she was not afraid, even if the journey back proved extremely dangerous. She also stated that the current government, led by Tarique Rahman, could arrest her, subject her to violence or threaten her life, but she would not abandon her plan to return.
However, she did not announce a confirmed date for her return.
Hasina left Bangladesh in August 2024 after the fall of her government. Her renewed pledge to return in December raises questions about whether she will be able to make the journey and what political consequences her return could have for the country.
For now, her stated intention remains clear, but the timing and circumstances of any return are yet to be confirmed.
