Watermelon and Milk — The Truth Behind the Age-Old Warning

Published

on

For generations, the combination of watermelon followed by milk or water has sparked concern in many households, especially across South Asia and the Middle East. Grandmothers would often warn: “Don’t drink water after eating watermelon,” or “Never take milk after watermelon — it causes rashes!”

But how much of this is actually true?

Watermelon is a naturally hydrating fruit, made of over 90% water and rich in vitamin C, A, and antioxidants. Due to its cooling and slightly acidic nature, traditional medicine often classifies it as a “cold” food, and recommends careful pairing.

According to Ayurveda, milk and watermelon are an incompatible combination (Viruddha Ahara), believed to disturb digestion, reduce metabolic fire (Agni), and possibly cause skin conditions. Scientifically, however, there’s no concrete evidence proving this combination causes long-term harm — though it may cause mild indigestion, especially in people with sensitive stomachs or lactose intolerance.

Experts suggest that drinking cold water immediately after watermelon could slow digestion and cause temporary bloating. While it’s not dangerous, it’s best to wait 15–30 minutes before drinking water and 1–2 hours before consuming milk.

Doctors and nutritionists agree: occasional consumption won’t harm healthy individuals, but people with IBS, food sensitivities, or children with weak digestion should be cautious.

In conclusion, timing and moderation are key. Avoid watermelon milkshakes and giving milk right after watermelon to kids — but for most people, spacing out the foods is enough to stay safe.
