Utility Stores Shutdown Hits Rural Areas the Hardest
The federal government’s decision to halt subsidies for utility stores has led to the closure of 446 stores nationwide, with plans underway to shut down over 500 more.
According to Utility Stores Corporation officials, only those stores with low revenue and high losses have been targeted for closure. However, it has been assured that no employees will lose their jobs as a result.
Most of the closed stores are located in rural areas, leaving residents grappling with limited access to affordable essentials. In Karachi, the closure of several stores has left shoppers frustrated.
It’s noteworthy that the federal government had ceased subsidies in August this year, now limiting them to just a few essential items, including flour, sugar, and cooking oil.
