The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has taken a major step to enhance dental education in Punjab by transitioning the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme from four to five years. Starting with the 2024-25 academic session, this revamped curriculum aligns with international standards and focuses on practical training, community dentistry, and clinical skills.

A key highlight of this change is the fifth year, designated as a “clerkship year,” which will be fee-free for students of both public and private dental colleges. The UHS Vice Chancellor, Prof Ahsan Waheed Rathore, emphasized that this year will serve as a practical training phase, supporting dental colleges’ workforce while benefiting students.

The decision was made during the 49th meeting of the UHS Board of Studies in Dentistry, attended by heads of 16 affiliated colleges. UHS Director of Medical Education, Dr Khalid Raheem, outlined the new integrated curriculum, with plans to train faculty members in December and January.

The board unanimously supported Prof Rathore’s suggestion to waive fees for the fifth year, further advocating for a stipend model. The Vice Chancellor described the new curriculum as a “living document,” adaptable to future advancements in dental education.
