The Spiritual Legacy of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam and the Historic Reburial
Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam, a prominent spiritual leader, is deeply revered in South and Central Asia, with his shrine in Multan serving as a beacon of faith and devotion. Born on the 9th of Ramadan in 649 Hijri, he hailed from a distinguished family of scholars and saints. He was the grandson of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya, a celebrated Sufi saint, and initially, his burial took place at his grandfather’s shrine, where he was laid to rest at the feet of his illustrious ancestor.
The current shrine, which has become an iconic symbol of Multan, was originally constructed by Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq, intending it to be his own mausoleum. However, historical accounts narrate that Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya appeared in a dream to the Sultan, instructing him to relocate his grandson’s remains to the newly built structure. Honoring this divine directive, Sultan Tughlaq arranged for the exhumation and reburial of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam in the grand mausoleum that stands today.
The event was witnessed by a large assembly of scholars, nobles, and citizens, marking it as a significant moment in the spiritual history of the region. Today, the shrine continues to attract millions of devotees from around the world, who come to pay their respects and seek blessings at this sacred site.
