Tears, often associated with emotional expression, have recently been found to play far more critical roles in both physical and mental health than previously understood. According to ophthalmologists and biomedical researchers, tears contribute significantly to maintaining eye health, reducing stress, and boosting immune defenses. Tears are essential for ocular health, as they keep the eyes lubricated, preventing dryness and flushing out irritants like dust and debris. They contain lysozyme, an antimicrobial enzyme that helps fight harmful bacteria, thus reducing the risk of infections. Furthermore, tears supply oxygen and essential nutrients to the cornea, promoting optimal eye function and ensuring sharp vision.

Emotional crying triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone linked to stress. Interestingly, this process also helps release oxytocin and endorphins—chemicals that alleviate pain and improve mood. This hormone regulation leads to activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a state of relaxation. Not all tears are created equal. While basal and reflex tears serve to lubricate and protect the eyes, emotionally triggered tears contain higher levels of toxins and stress hormones. Researchers suggest that crying might help expel these substances from the body, aiding in detoxification. However, further research is needed to fully understand this effect.

Despite the growing evidence of tears’ numerous benefits, scientists emphasize that their role remains complex. “Tears are vital for both ocular and systemic health, but they are only one part of a larger physiological puzzle,” says Dr. Elena Torres, an ophthalmologist at the Global Vision Research Institute.
