Tarbela Spillways Opened as Indus River Swells; Public Urged to Remain Alert
Due to persistent monsoon rains, the inflow of water at Tarbela Dam has surged dramatically, leading the authorities to open all spillways to manage the increasing pressure. The gates have been opened up to 14 feet, allowing excess water to be safely discharged downstream.
An official alert has been issued by the Tarbela Dam administration, advising the general public—especially those living near the Indus River—to stay away from water bodies and spillway zones to avoid any untoward incident.
The Indus River, known locally as Abaseen, is currently facing a medium-level flood. The water flow downstream from Tarbela is estimated at approximately 259,000 cusecs, a level expected to persist for several hours.
Local administration has expressed concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas and vulnerable villages along the riverbanks. Tourists visiting Tarbela or surrounding picnic spots are also advised to maintain a safe distance and comply with safety protocols.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents in at-risk zones to stay alert and follow instructions issued by disaster management units.
