In a major achievement for Pakistan’s water management and energy production, the Tarbela Dam has reached its full capacity, with water levels now standing at 1,550 feet. This milestone marks the second consecutive year that the dam has been fully filled, storing an impressive 5.8 million acre-feet (MAF) of water.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has confirmed that with the dam now at its maximum capacity, spillway gates have been opened to manage the overflow. An official announcement from WAPDA regarding the dam’s status is expected later today.

This development is being hailed as a significant success, particularly for the agricultural and power sectors. The stored water in Tarbela Dam will be utilized for irrigation purposes across the country, ensuring that agricultural activities continue smoothly during the upcoming seasons. The availability of sufficient water reserves is crucial for maintaining crop yields and supporting the livelihoods of farmers nationwide.

Moreover, the dam will continue to play a vital role in hydroelectric power generation, contributing to the stability of Pakistan’s national grid. With the ongoing challenges in the energy sector, particularly the decline in oil and gas production, the steady supply of hydroelectric power from Tarbela Dam provides a much-needed boost to the country’s energy mix.

This achievement comes as Pakistan faces a decline in oil and gas production over the past decade. Factors such as political instability, security concerns, and a lack of investment in exploration have led to a significant drop in crude oil production, highlighting the importance of alternative energy sources like hydroelectric power.
