Rocket Launch Pollution Raises Alarming Concerns for Ozone Layer

Experts have raised alarm over the environmental dangers of increasing rocket launches and satellite deployments. According to Professor Eloise Marais from University College London, rocket emissions are significantly raising carbon dioxide levels and contributing to severe atmospheric heating.

Data shows that in 2023, 223 launches were recorded, while 2024 saw 259 launches, burning over 153,000 tons of fuel. These emissions stay in the stratosphere, generating warming 500 times greater than surface pollution. Mega-constellations like Starlink and OneWeb have tripled pollution levels.

Since March 2023, the rising number of launches has posed a major threat to the ozone layer. In 2024 alone, more than 2,500 space objects entered the atmosphere, releasing metallic particles that can deplete ozone. Scientists warn that alumina particle levels may rise by 650% in coming decades, accelerating ozone destruction.

Experts have also criticized the FAA’s environmental review, calling it insufficient to address the growing risks to local ecosystems, birds, and marine life.
