Renowned Journalist and Author Khaled Ahmed Passes Away at 81
Renowned progressive writer and journalist Khaled Ahmed passed away at his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. His funeral prayer will be offered today (Monday) at 3 PM in Zaman Park. He is survived by his son.
Born in 1943 in Jalandhar, Ahmed migrated to Lahore with his family after Partition. He graduated with distinction from Government College Lahore and became a towering figure in Pakistan’s literary and journalistic circles.
Known for his fearless commentary and sharp intellect, Ahmed contributed to prominent newspapers, including The Pakistan Times, The Nation, The Friday Times, Viewpoint, and The Daily Times. His seminal book Sectarian War: Sunni-Shia Conflict in Pakistan remains a key resource on the subject.
Tributes poured in following his death, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) describing him as an inspiration for the youth. Journalist Najam Sethi remembered Ahmed as a “learned, soft-spoken, and modest” individual whose contributions went largely unrecognized by the state.
Ahmed’s legacy of truth-seeking journalism and critical analysis of ideology, politics, and history will continue to inspire future generations.
