The Punjab government has announced an innovative electric taxi service to tackle air pollution and boost job creation across the province. Inspired by China’s successful electric vehicle (EV) taxi model, the initiative will be spearheaded by Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The Punjab Transport Department has already begun discussions with several EV manufacturers, including the Deewan Group and National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), to implement the program.

The service will be introduced in phases, starting with Lahore and divisional headquarters, before expanding to other major cities. Operating 24/7, the service will provide round-the-clock transportation for residents.

Drivers will have access to flexible payment options, including down payments and installment plans, making vehicle ownership more feasible for aspiring taxi operators.

The initiative is driven by the urgent need to address urban air pollution caused by vehicular emissions. The government expects the project to not only improve air quality but also generate substantial employment in the transportation sector.

Specific launch dates and pricing details are yet to be announced.
