Punjab to Equip Policemen with Bodycams and Ban Social Media to Ensure Transparency
The Punjab government has taken significant steps to enhance transparency and professionalism within its police force by introducing body cameras for officers in the operations, investigation, and traffic wings. In a press briefing, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the safety and protection of citizens is a top priority, warning that negligence in this area will not be tolerated.
As part of the new measures, police officers will now wear bodycams to record their public interactions, ensuring real-time monitoring and accountability in law enforcement. This move is expected to help improve police behaviour, ensuring that officers act within the bounds of the law and maintain professionalism during their duties.
The implementation of body cameras comes alongside a strict ban on social media use during duty hours. The Punjab Home Department issued a directive prohibiting police personnel from using platforms such as TikTok and Facebook while on duty. This action was taken after concerns were raised about officers spending excessive time on social media, including making viral videos in their official uniforms.
According to the new policy, any officer found violating these rules by uploading videos while in uniform will face strict departmental action. Moreover, no social media activity will be permitted without the explicit approval of the District Police Officer (DPO).
The decision to implement these measures highlights the Punjab government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the professionalism of its police force. By curbing the misuse of social media and ensuring the proper use of bodycams, the government aims to improve public trust in law enforcement and safeguard citizens’ rights.
