The Punjab government has responded to the dangerous rise in smog levels by imposing widespread restrictions across four major divisions—Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, and Faisalabad. In a bid to tackle the hazardous air quality, public parks, zoos, museums, historical sites, playlands, and sports venues have been ordered to remain closed until November 17. This measure is part of the province’s ongoing efforts to combat the smog crisis, which has severely impacted air quality.

The notification issued by the Directorate General of Environment also warns that violation of these restrictions could result in fines and arrests under environmental protection laws. This decision comes alongside intensifying crackdowns on pollution sources, with over 47 vehicles emitting excessive smoke seized in Lahore. In addition, 31 more vehicles were fined a total of Rs550,000. Inspections of private institutions have also led to the sealing of non-compliant food stalls and commercial outlets.

In her statement, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb urged citizens, particularly parents, to keep children indoors, highlighting that “school closures do not mean it’s a picnic.” She emphasized the importance of following precautionary measures to safeguard public health.

Meteorologists have forecast that smog conditions will worsen next week, with low wind speeds worsening the situation. Data has shown that several cities, including Multan with an AQI of 2,135, are suffering from hazardous pollution levels.

Alongside these measures, the Lahore High Court has directed markets to close by 8 pm daily, with complete closures on Sundays, and ordered the restriction of smoke-emitting vehicles from entering Lahore and surrounding areas. The court’s actions underscore the severity of the pollution problem and the need for urgent steps to protect the public.
