Punjab Declares Health Emergency Amid Smog Crisis
Punjab’s worsening smog crisis has prompted a series of emergency measures, with Lahore and Multan under a declared health emergency. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced immediate actions, including extended school holidays, a ban on construction activities, and restricted dining hours to combat the alarming air quality levels. Lahore’s AQI reached a hazardous 2800, sparking widespread concern.
Brick kilns and furnace-based plants have been shut down, and a full lockdown may be implemented if conditions do not improve by midweek. Hospitals are working overtime as over 40,000 smog-affected individuals receive treatment. The government has also initiated the ‘Detox Lahore’ campaign, urging citizens to wear masks and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Aurangzeb called for public cooperation, stating, “Smog can cause death; we must unite to combat this crisis.” E-bikes and e-buses are being introduced to reduce emissions. Citizens are urged to prioritize health and safety during this critical time.
