PM Shehbaz Takes Notice of Massive Pay Raise for Speaker and Senate Chairman

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken immediate notice of the recent substantial salary increases granted to the Speaker National Assembly, Chairman Senate, Deputy Speaker, and Deputy Chairman Senate, amid growing public and political criticism.
According to official sources, the Prime Minister has sought a detailed report from the Speaker and the Chairman Senate to justify the pay hike. The decision on whether to allow or reverse the increase will be taken based on this report.
This controversial move saw the salaries of top parliamentary officeholders skyrocket into the hundreds of thousands, raising eyebrows especially when the government simultaneously announced a modest 10% salary increase for general public sector employees in the 2025–26 budget.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also publicly criticized the decision, calling it “economic obscenity.” In his social media post, he voiced opposition to increased financial perks at a time when ordinary citizens are battling inflation and economic hardships.
The backlash has prompted calls for greater accountability and fair treatment of all citizens under economic reform plans.
