Peshawar Residents Hit by Roti Price Hike Amid Ongoing Inflation

The people of Peshawar are grappling with yet another financial burden as the price of roti has been increased by Rs5. The district administration announced the new pricing, with a 125-gram roti now costing Rs20, compared to the previous price of Rs15 for a 120-gram roti. This price hike has been implemented immediately across the district.

The decision to raise the price was made on the recommendations of the Price Review Committee, which pointed to the rising cost of flour as the primary factor. According to local naanbai (bread makers), the price of an 80kg bag of flour has surged from Rs7,000 to Rs8,900, making it difficult for them to maintain previous prices without suffering financial losses.

Despite the increase, naanbai are still voicing concerns, stating that the new prices are insufficient to cover the soaring costs of ingredients. “Even with the new bread prices, we are still facing losses,” lamented one tandoor owner, highlighting the ongoing struggles within the sector.

This development comes on the heels of a recent surge in chicken prices, where the cost of live chicken soared to Rs440 per kilogramme. The continuous rise in prices of essential goods is pushing ordinary citizens to the brink, leaving them struggling to afford basic food items that were once staples in their diet. The situation underscores the severe impact of inflation on the daily lives of Peshawar’s residents.
