Peace in South Asia Tied to Resolution of Kashmir Dispute: Pakistan’s Foreign Office

Pakistan reiterated its firm stance that peace in South Asia is directly linked to the resolution of the Kashmir issue. During a press briefing on Wednesday, the Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized that Pakistan is prepared to engage with India, particularly under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). “Pakistan has consistently supported the right of self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” the spokesperson affirmed.

In preparation for the upcoming UN General Assembly (UNGA) session and the UN Future Summit, the spokesperson hinted at Pakistan’s upcoming diplomatic presence, but details of representation were not disclosed.

Pakistan also extended invitations to SCO member states for an upcoming summit in Islamabad, showcasing its commitment to regional cooperation. Addressing questions about Afghanistan, the Foreign Office clarified that foreign policy remains under federal government jurisdiction, confirming that diplomatic discussions with Afghanistan are ongoing after a recent border incident.

On the economic front, the spokesperson highlighted strengthened ties with China, including efforts to expand trade relations and progress on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, a critical step for Pakistan’s energy security.
