Today, France will kick off the 2024 Olympics with an extraordinary opening ceremony that will captivate the world. This year’s ceremony will be unlike any other, as it is set to take place along the Seine River, showcasing nearly 7,000 athletes and Paris’s most iconic landmarks.

In an unprecedented display of security, approximately 45,000 police officers, 10,000 soldiers, and 2,000 private security personnel will be deployed to safeguard the event. The procession of barges carrying athletes will glide past Parisian landmarks, with over 300,000 spectators expected to line the riverbanks.

The heightened security comes amid a tense global backdrop, with recent conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Despite the rigorous measures, French officials have assured there are no specific threats to the opening ceremony or the Games. Authorities have invoked powers from an anti-terror law, placing 155 individuals under surveillance to prevent potential threats. Additionally, Israeli athletes are receiving 24-hour protection from elite tactical units.

The opening ceremony will be protected by snipers stationed on rooftops, and the Seine’s riverbed has been cleared for bombs. Parisian airspace will be closed, with radar-surveillance planes and Reaper drones monitoring sensitive areas, and Mirage 2000 fighter jets on standby. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence in the preparations, stating in a video, “Everything is ready. Even the (Olympics) rings are there.” Macron, who had hoped the Games would enhance his legacy, faces local discontent due to extensive security measures affecting daily life along the Seine.

The Olympic Games will feature over 10,500 athletes, with the first gold medals to be awarded on Saturday. The closing ceremony is scheduled for August 11. The event promises to be a historic occasion as Paris hosts the Olympics for the first time in a century, with the opening ceremony marking a unique departure from traditional stadium settings.
