Pakistan’s Immunization Drive Still Struggles to Hit 100% Coverage

Despite spending billions annually on immunization, Pakistan has not yet achieved universal vaccine coverage for children. Latest data shows Islamabad and Punjab performing best with 90% coverage, followed by Sindh (84%) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (79%), while Balochistan trails at only 54%.

Dr. Sofia, Director General of Immunization, said the national program has seen steady improvements over the years. “A few years ago, our national average was just 54 percent. We’ve come a long way and are now aiming for over 95%,” she said.

Islamabad’s success is attributed to consistent policy and commitment. District Health Officer Dr. Rashida Syed noted, “We crossed 90% due to strong political support and field-level dedication. We’re aiming for 100% soon.”

However, the disparity across provinces remains a concern. Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Bharath, acknowledged gaps in KP and Balochistan. “Until every province reaches at least 90 percent, our fight against preventable diseases remains incomplete,” he said.
